Fraudulent LiveJournal messages.

What do people gain from doing this junk?

Control, essentially.

Damage to another's property is a form of exerting control; the impulse drives graffiti as well.

I've never really understood the purpose behind wanting control of others' journals.

Maybe I'm smarter than most; the moment I get one of these messages, I always check status, news, maintenence, and paid members before I act.

Wonder how they found out it was a fraud....it looks awfully convincing.

Well, it's really suspicious. There are very few problems that can simply be solved by having users log in.

Secondly, I think the fraudulent link was doctored to the real LJ page in the news post, to prevent people from accidentally giving the jerk(s) more passwords.

Only thing I can is maybe get credit card info, or other information that might be used/sold.

Am surprised this does not happen with EBay or other services.

Hmm. Makes one wonder.

Perhaps it's someone doing it because they can. A sick need to prove themselves to the hacker world.

I mean, LJ doesn't have a lot of damaging effects... they don't collect credit cards themselves, they don't have external access to paypal, they don't do stored emails (per se)... There's not a lot of power to exert, unless it's to post fraudulent blogs?

I had a point here. I think the new point is that I should not have picked up the second beer. Mayhaps I should go to bed.
