I'm not sure why, but gneech.com is getting pelted by spam posts -- like, way more than Suburban Jungle or NeverNever. The general model is a URL in the "website" field, which is kosher enough, and a "comment" along the lines of "These tips are so true!" -- on a fiction piece. Or a more generic comment like "Your have many useful info in your blog."

I don't know what to make of this. Certainly, anybody who puts a presence on the web needs to be prepared for the Attack of the Spammers ... but why is gneech.com, a relative newbie of site, getting so many more than SJ or NN? Is it somehow a more "high profile" site, just because it's not already hanging out in the webcomics ghetto? I haven't set up any "link trading" arrangements nor run any ads for it, just set up WordPress and started posting.

Maybe because I use it as the link in my e-mail sigs or comments on other blogs?

I'd like to think the increased attention it's getting from spammers suggests it's getting attention from other sources too ... but so far the spam comments outnumber reader comments by about 5/1. Alas!

Simple answer.

They go through all the websites, looking for wordpress blogs. (Or whatever CMS you use) Then the script takes over, and makes the post. It doesn't really take any effort. All the domains out there are easily available.. and most CMS's offer very similar interfaces.

I second this. Spammers have code that trawls the web, looking for well-known blogging software and automatically posting comments on every site they find. WordPress is common enough software that they can write this up, and it's basically effortless spamming: no need to spend human time looking for new sites or actually posting the comments, the software knows how to do it all. Humans just provide the text.

The really cool ones use keywords and article context to post relevant looking spam, too. It's gotten very technological. Never underestimate humanity's capacity for laziness.

That said, do you cross link your SJ and NN feeds to LJ as well? :)

Not at the moment, but there aren't any new posts at either of those to speak of, either. :)

I just checked your site...

Have you considered a CAPTCHA?

That said, this site contains a lot of nice tips...

Well, the comments don't get past the moderation stage, so I'm not real worried about it. Just sort of pondering it. :)

Yes, but with a CAPTCHA the SPAM won't even get that far, which means you have to waste less time on deleteing them.
