The State of the Computer
Dec. 1st, 2002 11:35 pmWell, so far, everything works but the scanner. :) I haven't done any heavy-duty stuff in Photoshop, which has been the resource hog in the past, so I still can't say if the upgrade has been a success ... but it at least hasn't been a horrible crashing failure, either.
WinXP seems pretty nice, although the whole Fisher Price thing is annoying. I wonder if there's anywhere in the settings I can go back to the old Windows look. It wasn't great, but it wasn't vaguely insulting, either.
Still only have half of my intended software installed, so I know what I'll be doing a lot of this week!
Anyway, it's bedtime now. G'nite!

RE: windows look
Date: 2002-12-01 08:57 pm (UTC)Control Panel -> Display Properties -> Appearance Tab -> Windows and Buttons:
Select "Windows Classic Style." That should turn off most of the Fisher Price effects but still retain the newer, nifty functionality portions of WinXP.
The other thing to fiddle with is:
Control Panel -> Taskbar and Start Menu
On this one I would recommend going through pretty much everything and see what you like and what you don't. Personally I keep the "regular" Start Menu and use the Customize button (under the Start Menu tab) to switch to Small Icons and turn off the "Highlight newly installed programs."
I hope this helps.
Jason
P.S. There are right-click ways of getting to these two menus but I thought this would be the easiest way. For the Display Properties just right-click anywhere on the Desktop and choose Properties; for the Taskbar and Start Menu right-click on the Task Bar and again choose Properties from that menu.
Let me know if I missed anything.
