IF he can put out the strip again, and IF he can reclaim the fun, fanciful joy of years past, THEN I'd consider getting his stuff on a card or a mug. If I got my oldest daughter an Opus doll, she'd just give me a blank stare and ask "Who's Opus?"
Hmph! Sparky never "retired." He drew "Peanuts" and died the same day it ended. I don't see how Breathed thinks he's such big stuff that he could stop making his comic and people would buy his silly merchandise until the end of time. I understand the need to take a vacation and even a year off. But killing the strip which puts his "merchandise" in front of people's eyes every day so that everyone knows it (and wants it) was stupid IMHO. Schultz was a genius; Breathed used to be one, but now he's just a failed marketer.
Can you tell I'm a little ticked about him quitting?
I'm not ticked about it ... as soon as (almost down to the DAY) Bush Sr. entered the White House, Bloom County suddenly stopped being any fun. Outland, alas, never was. I'm just as happy that he didn't drag it out.

Like I said, he would need to make the strip again and be funny once more. While I can appreciate not wishing to drag it out to a prolonged and painful death, he could have handled the strip like Trudaue (sp?) did with Doonesbury - he could have taken a year off to relax and think of a way to update and reinvigorate it. But Breathed was making a fortune with his merchandise, so he concluded that he could retire and live on easy street.
I miss "Bloom County" and "Calvin and Hobbes" very much. They brought me laughter when I was in the farthest armpit of the world and very little happiness reached me. I would welcome them with open arms if they would just try to bring their gentle magic back to the world once more.
