Dear Boba Fett:
There's this guy I'm crushing on in my Earth Sciences class; he's so cute! But whenever I try to talk to him I just freak out and come off like a total spazoid. What can I do? Should I just grab him, or what?
--Tripping Over My Tongue

Dear Tripping Over My Tongue:
What if he doesn't survive? He's worth a lot to me.

Dear IG-88:
You know that quote about "slay your enemies, drive them before you, hear the lamentations of their women"? I know for a fact that's from Conan the Barbarian, I've got it on VHS even, but my idiot roommate says it was first said by Genghis Khan. Can you prove him wrong?
--Annoyed by a Doofus

Dear Annoyed by a Doofus:
I think, therefore I am. I destroy, therefore I endure.

Dear Cad Bane:
I am totally frustrated! I've just been passed over for promotion -- again!! -- and I seriously think it may be just because I'm a woman. I keep seeing younger, less experienced men getting promoted right and left, but whenever I want to get ahead, it's "Oh, no, *you* can't be promoted, you'll just get pregnant and quit." I'm so furious!!! Do you think I have grounds for a lawsuit?

Dear Where's Dolly, Lily, and Jane When I Need Them?
Sorry to bother you, Chancellor, but I've taken control of the East Wing of your Senate Building, and the occupants are now my hostages. If you care about them, I'd advise you to free Ziro the Hutt from the Detention Center.

Dear Bossk:
Which weighs more, a ton of mice or a ton of elephants?

By this time next week, if all goes to plan, SJ will be done.

I already don't know what to do with myself. 0.o

I mean, I've got projects that want finishing, and there's all that "playing LotRO" and other recreational-type stuff I've been lamenting about my lack of doing. And NeverNever seriously needs some attention. But none of those really have me fired up; they'll keep me busy for a while, but they're basically filler.

SJ has until now given my life a vector to follow, albeit one that has occasionally had some significant costs in other facets. (I know, that's a really awkward sentence, but I couldn't come up with a better way to express the idea.) Everything has been measured by its impact on the strip: "That might be a great source of ideas for SJ!" "I can't stay, I gotta go home and draw." "We need a house with a big enough room for the drawing table."

Now, or at least, once I finish these last two pages, that framework won't be there. For the first time in ten years, "work on SJ" won't be my default activity for the evening. In fact, at least for now, I won't have a default activity for the evening, and I'm already feeling the associated twitchiness.

I wonder if this is what it's like for the newly-retired?

I know it won't stay like this; it's just not in my nature to drift for any length of time. At some point, one of the various projects that I've been wanting to do will grab ahold of my brain the way SJ did and I'll become just as single-minded about it; but until that happens, I'm going to be un-moored and generally floating around like a ghost in my own life. I am what I do ... so who am I when I'm not doing anything?

I don't know why this topic has my brain by the scruff of the neck, but since this is clearly more important to me than my project at work (which is waiting on some client feedback anyway), here are my thoughts about immediate plans:

I've pretty much decided against NaNoWriMo this year; while it would be fun to give it a try, I have other things that have a slightly higher priority and would be better served by working on, specifically:

  • SJ Compendium I'd like to have this to show at FC 2010, so I need to get it into production now. Printers tend to be busy this time of year with Christmas work, but if I can have my stuff ready to move in time for the post-Christmas hole (late Dec. / early Jan.), that should set me up nicely for FC. It probably won't take all of November to lay the thing out, but it might just take me that long to do covers, with the way I seem to have so much trouble putting pencil to paper any more.

  • Cleaning up the websites. The SJ site needs a major overhaul and something of a redesign to make room for those verschlugginer quadruple-height ads that have been popping up lately. The OhNoRobot! transcriptions also need to be gone through and completed. Furthermore, I'd like to to a complete redesign on gneech.com, preferably with some sort of CMS/blogging software built in to make it easier to update. Reminder to myself: Follow-up w/ Kerry about putting some form of CF on that server!

  • NeverNever I've got an outline through the end of Book II; I just need to turn that into scripts/storyboards so that [mystery artist] can get it into [mystery pronoun] project queue. I could probably finish that over a weekend, once I had a weekend to dedicate to it.

  • Home repairs. Believe it or not, I do actually need to turn my attention to these. I also have to figure out what to do about a new lawn mower.

That ought to keep me occupied for a while. :)
