Huh. I didn't realize how annoyed I was by the Irene Adler ep. of Sherlock until I wrote that Fictionlet.

In the original (as I recall it, anyway, it's been a long time), Irene Adler just flat out BEAT Holmes. No vagueness, no coy games, nothing. She had his number and she called it-- and her reasons for doing so were perfectly understandable. There was sure as hell no grinding her into the dirt, humiliating her, and then turning her into an emblem of women's oppression.

Dude. When a Victorian era story fundamentally respects a woman and your interpretation fundamentally tries to crush her under the heel of guyness? You're seriously doing it wrong.

Ugh.

I read the original fairly recently, she OWNED him, absolutely and completely... and also cleverly and neatly, and there was obvious mutual respect between them.

If you want to read a nice take on Adler, might I suggest Carole Nelson Douglas' Good Night, Mr. Holmes? In it, she tackles Adler's past history, including her stint with Pinkerton Detectives and her adventures with the King of Bohemia. I love it, and fell in love with her more than I did than Holmes. :D

They had a chance to do Sherlock Holmes RIGHT, and even got a great start. Made him properly annoying when explaining, his lunatic moods when he didn't have anything to do.
Then they go and F! U! such an important character...

Guess which DVDs won't make it to my collection?

Have Adam Adamant party in Rotterdam's Red Light district?
Have 'The Cat' from Red Dwarf change sex?
Make Austin Powers drive around in an old Ford Anglia?

For the sake of product placement, James Bond switches out his martinis for beer in the upcoming Bond film: Skyfall. Granted, its not near the degree of rewriting characters listed, but still, his "shaken, not stirred" is iconic. Grabbing a quick "brewskie" just seems so jarring for a character who took such pride in his uncompromising sophistication.

Oh my dog! What are they doing to his character? Next thing you know, he'll be mixing up "Purple Jesus" in his hotel trash can with some Everclear and grape Koolaid!

Here in the states, the most potent alcohol you can buy is probably "Everclear", a "neutral spirit" available at 151 or 190 proof (about 75% or 90%). If wuffy recalls correctly, the 190 proof (90%) is the strongest alcohol legally allowed for sale as a beverage here in the states. And even the 190 proof is illegal for sale in several states.

Anything stronger can physically injure the person that drinks it, unless they dilute it prior to swallowing. Alcohol that pure can literally suck the water from the lining of the throat and mouth, and injure the tissues.

(As a side note, the 190 proof version has several non-beverage uses, like a thinner for shellac for fine woodwork, and other industrial applications.)

Well, the second pilot for an American Red Dwarf had Cat played by Terry Farrell, who went on short after to play Jadzia Dax on Star Trek DS9.
