Actually, I looked up shin splints; I don't think that's it, since those are tears in the tendons caused by running on hard surfaces and whatnot. I think what I have is more just soreness from stretching the tendons in ways they're not used to.
It was one day I went to something I had to walk a whole lot more than usual at, and somehow that made the muscles on the fronts of my shins sore. I didn't notice at first, then the next day I woke up in pain and said, "what the heck?? I have muscles *there*??"
Shin splints is totally different...that's what my ballet teacher used to say we'd get if we didn't be sure to bend our knees when landing from jumps....like you said before, it's from hard impacts on hard surfaces like running or jumping improperly.
