OK, how on earth do you separate what goes on the friends list and what goes in your Journal?!

When you post, there's a pull down for Security (under options if you're using a client). That lets you control who can see your entry and who can't.

Are you referring to chopping off what's visible, so that to read the rest, they have to click on the "read more" prompt? That uses the "lj-cut" tag, which is described in the FAQ. :) Hope this helps! -TG
