My computer hard drive seems to have imploded, and my attempts to recover it may have erased all of the slave/external drives as well (blaps self). I'm going to try again in the morning, but right now it looks like a total loss.

My last large-scale backup was just before I installed XP on the machine, which was sometime late last year if I recall. So I'm not sure how much stuff I've lost, but some of it is significant and painful (particularly hi-res computer-colored images).

I don't know how long it's going to take me to get a system up and running again; I am also rather worried, given that my computer at work died in almost exactly the same manner earlier this week, that some file of mine or possibly a website I frequent both at home and at work may be spreading some new virus.

Or it may just be me. :P

I don't know if there will be SJ next week or not, at this rate.

Thanks ... still sorta reeling at the moment. My current plan is:

1) Cry like a big ol' baby

2) Go see Pirates of the Carribbean in the morning to get my spirits back up

3) Figure out what to do next to fix it -- which may include a new machine

Ouch :-(

I faced a similar situation just last week. My solution is:

http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/combo120gb.asp for $220.00 and a copy of http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage/ for $50.00 ($5 cheaper on their www if you DL it).

The external drive rocks - USB + firewire I/O makes it as universal an external drive as you can get.

Throughput on the firewire is very reasonable too. I did have to buy an additional cable to connect to my Dell 8100 laptop 1341 port, which uses a mini 4 pin connector vs. the standard sized 5 sided "house with a roof" firewire connector.

After backing up the laptop using the Acronis software, I was also able to run a batch file I wrote which uses xcopy to make an immediately readable copy of my user files. After that, I nuked the HD and did a re-install of the OS from scratch.

That took maybe 12GB if that, so I started to rip all my CD's to the external drive and can also use it as a portable MP3 juke box :-)

Good luck on recovering the other drives - remember: CD-R is your long term storage friend. CD-R's saved my bacon last month big time for rescuing the hirezfox.com server that hosts [livejournal.com profile] kelloggs2066 hi resolution version of his comic. Yes, I've been going through HD's like popcorn too :-/

PS: You are surrounded by some really heavy IT hitters here - don't wipe your HD's until you've had a chance to mind meld with them on your recovery options.

I will suggest one thing: Disconnect all secondary and external HD's before you fire the system back up to avoid any further data loss problems. Concentrate your efforts on the system partition of the boot drive first.

It is things like this that make me glad that I have a Mac.
Sorry to hear about your computer crash, that HAS to suck. =\
Hopefully you have a CD backup.

Trust me, having a Mac doesn't make you immune. Back when I had a Powermac 7300, my hard drive went strange and the only way to recover it was a full erase 'n reinstall. I didn't have a backup at the time, so I lost two years worth of files.

*goes to get his DVD-Rs to save his precious 12" Powerbook's files...*

Oh Dook... I hope you get your system back in one piece. Good luck. If you need any help, suggestions, a shoulder to cry on, or just someone to hand you the sledgehammer... let me know. :> I like sledgehammers. Weeee!

*hug* Really though, if your not able to get next week's comics up, I think we'll understand. Blown up computers = Bad computers.

You know, Litho has a very similar art style. I'm sure that if you asked him, he'd be glad to do the art for next week's strips. You know, like a guest artist, but with your script? I know its probably not a good idea, but I'm rather confident that it 'could' work.
