Snarl! Hiss! Pfft! Oy.
Jul. 30th, 2003 09:54 amMore flamewars in the SJ forum. Blech. *pulls out the clue-by-four*
I remember when I first realized that there were people out there who actually liked to bicker and be nasty to other people ... who thought that it was somehow very funny to be insulting and rude and stir up trouble. Until then, I'd just sorta assumed, I guess, that the personality type was a construct created to make stories, and nasty people I met in the world around me just didn't realize they were being nasty, or would grow out of it. The idea of there really being Eris / Loki types who genuinely liked to just be nasty for its own sake is so far removed from my nature, that I can't really wrap my mind around it.
It's bad enough when generally well-meaning people have conflicts, either real or perceived ... it's another thing when there's somebody whose express intention is to incite sparks as some kind of perverse power trip. I just find that revolting, and in my own forum, I don't have to tolerate it.
And I won't.

Guess I'm glad I forgot my password and am too lazy to go get another one, eh? I can't stand flame wars either, which is why I don't bother to go to message boards anymore.

Date: 2003-07-30 07:43 am (UTC)A note on Loki/Eris: it's a common misconception that they're nasty just for nastiness' sake. They serve a purpose within the general scheme of the universe and what they do weighs heavily on their conscience. I tend to work more with Loki than with Eris, so most of my information is from that angle. There's a fragment of poetry regarding his function: "Where the water stinks, I break the dam". His actual purpose is to create needed change ---controlled chaos if you will --- where it might be held back or otherwise not occur at all. The people of which you speak aren't Loki or Eris generated; they're just asswipes who can't think beyond personal benefit. They're so insecure in themselves that they have to incite insecurity in others so that they can feel better.
Just out of curiosity....how DOES one end up with a flame war over a comic strip? It does have inciteful and meaningful content, but it's basically art either way. What's to fight over?

Date: 2003-07-30 09:03 am (UTC)And I know about trolls meself --- there used to be a Forgotten Realms chat I used to go to and a lot of people, myself included, liked to start something. The more mature players would have their characters sit back and watch the twinking going on.
I was known for beheading my character's wife after our "son from 2000 years in the future" came back to try to restore our marriage. I *hate* futuristic time travel and that was the result.

It's hard to understand
Date: 2003-07-30 09:12 am (UTC)Loki is a decent enough fellow, if you get him in the right mood, and Eris is frequently seen as just stirring up people to see what they'll do.
If they just blink, take a step back and calm down, that's good too.
but it's so hard....
wow.
Date: 2003-07-30 11:49 am (UTC)I guess i'll break my vow of "thou shalt not ever enter another Forum" just this once, so i can bear witnes.
I'll be one to admit, i love started a good debate.
