Am I being vague?
When I attempt to express irritation at snarls and drama in my forum, am I accidentally saying, "Oh, and please have more interpersonal conflicts here, everybody!" instead?
Is it too much for me to ask that people be calm, friendly, and respectful to each other, or if they can't, to take it outside?
FWIW, the latest person moved his post out of the forum at my request, hopefully before flames had a chance to kick back up again ... but given that it's somebody who should know better -- and somebody who friggin' read in this very LJ that I was trying to calm things back down, I am beginning to wonder if maybe it's me!
Sheesh. No wonder Moses smashed the stupid tablets.

Date: 2003-07-31 09:53 pm (UTC)We're in the middle of the long haul of a hot 'n humid summer right now. I'm convinced that the miasma inducing weather with no 3 day weekend in sight until doomsday (or September, which ever comes first) in the US at least, predisposes everyone to a bad dose of grumpatoses and brainfadeitis after yet another grungy day of grinding drudgery...
Gee wasn't that a cheerful bit of whining? ;-)

Date: 2003-08-01 04:11 am (UTC)It is not you, nor anything that you are doing.
As I said in my journal my actions are my own and I again apologize for adding to your angst. Heaven knows you have had a full plate of that this year.
As for the most recent flare up,One of the parties involved and I had a chat last night. He admitted that he a bit to quick to anger.
I don't think he wanted to add to your problems as he knew how you felt about my recent actions on the forum.
I think the forum will settle down, though these spates of flare ups of flame will happen no matter how hard you try to keep it calm. You see, the forum is getting bigger because SJ is attracting new readers. This being the case people are bound to rub others the wrong way. It is human nature and you can only try to keep the rubbing to a bare minimum. You can't stop it altogether.
So what to do. Give up and allow the forum be dragged down to infighting and flame wars? HELL, NO!
Do what you have been. Eventually all the newcomers, as well as the old timers will come to realize that you will not put up with such nonsense, or be reminded of that fact.
It was remarked to me that people thought that you had given me the passwords to become forum co-moderator when needed. I set the person straight on that fact.
I had jumped in, from time to time, to keep the forum at the point to where you did not have to wear your "moderator's hat", which I know you dis-like.
Unfortunately, I'm not there at this point in time to help, and of course I couldn't read all posts right away anyhow.
So, in closing john, keep doing what you are doing with the forum, because it is one of the least angsty, and most friendly forums around. To that we have to thank you.

Date: 2003-08-01 06:55 am (UTC)You have conflicts between Tiffany and Leona. There's (well, was) an unrequited love interest between Leonard and Tiffany. There's the job situation with the cheetah (sorry - glitch in the naming systems of my brain this morning.) Resolving conflicts and showing characters rising up to meet and overcome challenges is part of writing a good story.
However, unlike writing a novel, you are doing a serial comic strip. You can't allow all the conflicts to resolve or the strip would end. Certain obstacles must always remain for the sake of continuity. For example: Lucy always butted heads with Charlie Brown. She never let him kick the football, ever. And Snoopy always fought the Red Baron. With these little eternal conflicts Charles Shultze made a strip that lasted half a century.
