Hmm ... a moderate Republican who believes in fiscal responsibility while supporting pro-choice and gay rights?

A man of wit and charm who leveraged bodybuilding and pure moxie into a fortune?

Gee, seems to me you could do a lot worse than Arnold Schwartzenagger. :)

Alas, he's not eligible to run for President.

The Letterman Top Ten list (on the web this morning) was a list of "Arnold's Campaign promises." Most of which were silly. Number 6 was that he'd "Seek council from elder statesmen, like Jesse Ventura." My thought was that he could do a lot worse.

Except he has no political experience and has no idea what he's getting into. I'd prefer someone who isn't just enamored of the idea of "playing" governor.

we need someone who has a different outlook

and I think he does have some sort of idea of what he's getting into...this is a guy who does not want to fall flat on his ass and look like an idiot...he has also been active in California Republican politics since the late eighties...the next 45 days are going to be a litmus test---is he "playing" or does he really want to make some positive changes?

The Republican party seems to like to weed out the pro-choice gay rights moderates (see Riordan in 2002--I would have voted for him over Davis---voted Green in protest) and put those conservatives in that only show up in pockets of Orange County or on Modesto ranches that are still stuck in the stone age...

I think this entire process is a farce...I also don't hold out much hope for the executive branch "cleaning up" the legislative morass that Willie Brown created and term limits have only made worse. What Ahnold would do, though, is work towards attracting business to the Golden State and I think he'd be successful at it. Riordan would have done the same...I'm staying tuned and will be at my polling place October 7th...

he's on good terms with papa Bush, but not really with George W. and that might not change all that much. It is going to take a very weak Democratic campaign for George W to carry California next year and he will focus his attentions elsewhere. We'll see though! This instance is one of the rare times that I'm not proud to be a native Californian!...MLD

We could, indeed, do a lot worse.

My mate and I were in a little italian restaurant yesterday, and CNN was on the TV, on mute. Ed thought we were in a parallel universe. He hadn't heard about the absurdity going on in the Cali race. He and I both agreed that it was a shame he couldn't run for President.

I think anything is an improvement over Davis. I mean, he's so ineffectual (and he lost gawd knows how much money).

He actually has a suprising amount of exposure to the world of politics -- Senator Dana Rohrbacher and LA's former Mayor Richard Riordan and former Gov. Pete Wilson are very long-time friends. All are involved in his campaign, particularly Wilson who is co-chair.

And I note with approval that his recent appearance at the inner-city games, rather than being a "let's look good" new publicity stunt, was the eleventh year in a row that he has performed this service.

We will learn more about his politics in the next few days.

My favorite, Tom McClintock, doesn't have much of a chance it seems.
