If I'm not mistaken, Zen is younger than Tao, and has taken much influence from it. In fact, if my memory is correct, Zen is a blending of Taoist and Bhuddist philosophy.

But followers of Zen do not hunger for the original, pristine purity of the Tao. In fact, they strive to rise above such an addiction, as they consider such a Tao jones ... average.

Normally, I'd compliment you on making a NYSE pun, but that one just hurt.

Though, when you think about it, the reason Zen's founders didn't just follow the Tao was that they didn't see it as beneficial by itself. You might say, they had gained mutual interest in combining the philosophies.

Seriously, I think Zen is Japanese in origin and Taoism is Chinese in origin.
