ALBANY, N.Y. - A judge Thursday dismissed criminal charges against a small-town mayor for marrying gay couples, saying the state failed to show it has a legitimate interest in banning same-sex weddings.
New Paltz Town Court Justice Jonathan Katz also ruled that prosecutors failed to prove the law New Paltz Mayor Jason West was charged with violating was constitutional.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that somethings don't have to be recognized by society in order to be meaningful... but maybe I'm wrong.

Date: 2004-06-11 12:11 pm (UTC)To me the purpose of a marriage is to have children, to increase society... something which, left to themselves, only a man and woman are capable of doing. The problem is that society has clipped this notion along with legal status such as the things you have mentioned. I'm of the opinion that we need another legal status that would allow legal grounds for visitation rights, power of attorney, etc.
I have nothing against M/M or F/F couples that want to be legally joined, but to me the idea of their being married is saying that these couples would be capable of doing anything a traditionally married M/F would be able to do, and they, biologically, can't.
Or maybe I'm just a bad guy. Feel the evil baby ! hehehe.

Date: 2004-06-11 01:45 pm (UTC)"Ham sandwich" = "Marriage"... There's an obscure reference to be saved for later... or used as a running gag to lighten an otherwise serious subject.
People just don't agree on what is and isn't a good set of conditions for "ham sandwich". What "ham sandwich" means to one person isn't necessarily what "ham sandwich" means to someone else. And I think that legally and morally, society won't be able to come to a consensus on what a "ham sandwich" really is, and what it's supposed to mean.
Anywho sorry if this conversation's been dragging you down any, you've posted that you weren't doing well this morning, hope things are looking up.
