Another bulb bites the dust on this halogen floor lamp. So now the question is: new bulb, or new lamp? I don't like the "fragile as a butterfly and ever-ready to BURNINATE YOUR HOUSE" nature of the thing, but on the other hand, it's probably the second brightest lamp I've ever seen.

Gah, decisions, decisions.

And dark. Right where I need to see to draw.

Gah.

and get a torch lamp that will take a 250 watt incandescent light bulb...and then get one of the super saver bulbs for it...works as well as my halogen lamps (haven't had time to take out the ones in the living room---I bought those back in Grover Beach)...

spoiled by the fact that Home Depot is about a mile from casa d'ethernet...

Well, they didn't have one that took a 250; the closest they had was one that would take two 100s, so that's what I got.

It's still dark in here. But not AS dark.

take 300 or 500 w bulbs? (my living room ones take 300)

I suggest them spiralley bulbs. But not "Soft White". That color's too terrible and ruins the atmosphere of my room. I like "Cool White" bulbs.
Ooh, or a blacklight. Those are fun.

that's what I was talking about....

*hands you a small, portable, remote-control sun*

*batteries not included*

Absetively posi-NOT-ley!! Can you imagine the damaging ability of a portable sun?? The polar ice caps would melt and you'd have your droughts and so much trouble!
If anything... A portable full moon. Reflected light is less harmful.

ah, thats the cunning bit! because it's small, it should only run the risk of defrosting your fridge ^.^ or the ice in your drink in summer

But I -LIKE- my ice! Can't we have a minimum-heat-emitting light source?

Yes -- they're called LED's. :)

I already know of those. ^^;; Just y'know.. They're not so great for light unless you put them together and they use battery over time and I don't know if there's an AC type plug for one.
Still, that's way better than a 'portable sun'.

Hmf, even the "chibi" suns can cause massive disaster. They simply can't be trusted!

Actually, they make drop-in replacements for standard light bulbs now; they're clusters of LEDs mounted in a screw-thread base with a diffuser lens over the cluster. Examples can be found here (http://www.theledlight.com/120-VAC-LEDbulbs.html) and here (http://www.ccrane.com/led-light-bulbs.aspx). :)

Now that's what I'm talking about! Do they sell them regularly at hardware stores? And is their output less than even the spiral flourescent bulbs?

I'm not sure if they sell them at hardware stores or not; I've never really looked for them. :)

As for their light output, it depends on which model you buy and how much you want to pay -- they do make models that will rival the output of an incandescent bulb for about 1/10th the power consumption, but they're not cheap...

A couple all-but-free floor standing bin lamps with 20W bulb-style fluorescents will give as much light as that halogen, and much less heat, not to mention lower energy usage, and will last until intelligent life evolves on Europa. Buy and forget. ^_^

There are various colors available, of course - that's a matter of personal preference - including slightly more exotic ones that replicate sunlight uncannily well. (A friend installed one, whimsically, in a kitchen "sunlight". You wouldn't have known it wasn't a sunlight, save for being able to turn it off :)

The one drawback, though, is not being able to enjoy entertaining modes of failure in incandescents. The last one (prior to picking up a few fluorescents) in my bedroom cracked around the metal/glass boundary - so this glass bulb plopped onto the floor, otherwise intact, with the remnants glowing away particularly brightly, if briefly.

I really enjoy the small one I installed in the room that I was in. It help with the late night blues as well :). I going to have to figure out a way to get it set up over here but that a project for another time :)

Otherwise just the 14 buck florisiant *yeah I know I spelling it wrong* are great. They last and last. The ones I had lasted over 3 years. so they did pay for themselfs.

good luck
