Herbie pointed out that my mouths are always up on the front of the muzzle, and suggested that I should try bringing the corners of the mouths back under the eyes more -- and he's right! That was something I was trying to integrate into the design for Brody Coyote, actually.

So he gave me an assignment, which was to practice by finding some pics of Mufasa and copying them.

Mufasa! MufasaMufasaMufasa!!!

I can see what he means! When I was drawing the picture on the top, it felt like the line of his mouth kept on going forever! 0.o But the final product looks perfectly natural.

I'm gonna have to do some more work on this concept, definitely.

If I had known you were looking for those kinds of tips I could've toldja that ;-p I thought the tiny mouth was a stylistic thing you LIKED doing.
It emphasizes the cheekbones more, which I found was vital to the "animation"-ish facial style. So hope ya like practicing that :-)

Like I said, it's a stylistic thing, so it has nothing to do with learning how to draw. There's who-knows-how-many anime-based furry artists who would shudder at the thought of a big jaw, but turn out popular art anyway. We kind of would have to know what sort of tips you want.

FWIW, the tiny mouth works GREAT for you with females, because you keep the distinctive species muzzle shape and but retain a little cute mouth. So I'm curious if you would end up adapting Herbie's tip for women...I have severe problems with it myself, hence why all my women are drawn alike x_x

I agree, that dainty mouth works very well for the gals. I had to diminish muzzle mass for women, otherwise they ended up looking very masculine.

Of course, one of my new cast is a masculine-looking female, so it works there ;)

I rarely am afflicted with LJ post-eating, but it got me this time.

Upshot -- Narnia good for animals speaking, especially the beavers. Their lips were different enough to tell Mr. from Mrs. Beaver on close up of lips only, I think.

Note in particular the wolves for "speaking with long mouth wrapped around muzzle". And the fox. You'll have several opportunities through the middle third of the film on the wolves.

You haven't seen Narnia!!!?
Go, go now, go, Go, GO!

Level Head is correct with the speaking animals. Whoever did the work on that really spent some time getting the lips to move in very believable ways. I want to get the DVD as soon as possible so I can see just how some of that was done (and I'm not talking about the mechanics of it). From a writer's point of view it will be a great study for how a talking animal would appear to a human.

Yes, go go go! And before you leave the theater, go see King Kong! All I could think of, every time I saw a close-up of Kong was "wow, The Gneech is gonna love this for drawing Eddie!"

You MUST see it in the theater!

Have the best

Oh Eddie and King Kong! Now that brings up some interesting one frame SJ possibilities. Maybe Eddie playing King Kong? King 'Eddie' Kong. Oh the fun to be had.

*Cries* stop it! it won't come out here in Ecuador until January 1st. I've been wanting to see it.

Bloody third world countries. I had to wait two months for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They STILL haven't shown The Corpse Bride here.

Mmm. I should try that as well. Hmm. Must be nice to get homework assignments from Herbie though. Heck, I'm sure he could make a whole book called 'Herbie's Homework Assignments for Artists', and sell it and make a bazillion bucks. Or maybe not but hey, its still cool. And... Damnit! I just remembered I /still/ haven't looked at my Herbie Art CD I bought back at AC'04 yet. *grumbles* Must put that on my priority list.

Well, Herbie's kinda erased his internet presence, so it might be hard to find. But I'll poke around and see if I can find out who (if anybody) has it still.

Yeah, he was selling it at Anthrocon in '04, but I don't know if he made any for '05. I got mine signed though, since he was selling the last few the last couple of hours of AC'04. Supposedly it was full of good good Herbie stuff. I think there was mention of over 1 full hour of slide show artwork you could let play.

Man does this bring back memories. Back in the day, copying Lion King art was not only my first 'furry' work, it was what got me back into drawing and art on my way to getting an art degree.

Ain't Herbie neat? I met him once, but never really talked to him- mostly listened, he had enough people asking questions :) Someday I'd like to have a chat with him, but I am always slow about getting to do those things :P You were a fluke :P

I've noticed the small mouth at the tip of the muzzle in a lot of furry stuff, but I've never had a problem with it. I figure, it must be pretty hard the enunciate properly when 80% of your mouth is open, so everyone just "puckers up" and talks out of the tip. Pretty much the same as when they need to drink. Also, that why, when they do break out the full muzzle, toothy grin, it's pretty impressive.
