FIRE
DANGER
BURN BANS

And about halfway to Dallas, I saw a field on fire! (The fire was out the next day when I drove by again, but it left a huge charred area.)

Date: 2006-01-09 06:39 pm (UTC)To lose your house and all your possessions at age 81?
That's gotta be rough. :(

Date: 2006-01-09 06:47 pm (UTC)(Well...you ASKED!)
Must have been something like an old Warner Bros. cartoon, though, with the old dude (after a long battle) finally tossing the pesky little rodent on the fire, cackling "Burn, baby, burn!"---
Only to see the little fireball run back to the house...which quickly catches fire and burns, despite the old codger's best efforts to put it out.
I can see Elmer Fudd and Speedy Gonzalas doing a similar stunt, with Porky Pig (the fireman) saying, "T-t-t-that's all, folks!" over the house's smoking embers...
(OK, it's a SLOW Monday, all right? *hehehe!!!*)

Okay, I'm just in a sad mood and I'm not sure why, that's all. Nevermind.

Date: 2006-01-09 10:32 pm (UTC)Of course it's a terrible tragedy, but most human comedy is based in very real tragedy and/or pain, either personal or observed. The celebrated Jewish and black comedians (both alive and dead) almost always had TERRIBLE early lives, yet they managed to turn their misery into successful comic careers. Doesn't minimize their pain and suffering one bit, though.
No doubt this old man suffered a shock (losing everything he owned) that will probably hasten him toward the grave, and in no way am I minimizing the loss of his home and possessions. During my photojournalism days I photographed countless house/condo (whole buildings!) and business fires, and those poor folks experienced losses almost impossible for us who've not been burned out to comprehend. Almost had my own home burned down several times, but either got the fire out in time (kitchen fires) or smoldering ones never "fully caught" before they were discovered (attic electrical). Scares the living @#$%@# out of you when that happens!
But human comedy, being what it is and taking its cue from pain, tragedy and absurdity, saw this "mouse that ROARED" (or flamed, to be accurate) story as a bit of "poetic critter justice" to many who first read the story. And while the little varmit no doubt succumbed to its burns, its managing to turn the proverbial tables on its human tormentor caught people's fancy.
Hope things soon improve for you, Scott! Being "down" is no fun at all---

Date: 2006-01-10 08:48 am (UTC)And actually, I always figured that most of the great comedians, regardless of ethnicity, probably had pretty rough times growing up. That's why so many started off with being class clowns and the like. Ironically, I also wonder if that's why so many of the great comedians also turned into some of the best dramatic actors as well.
Just a couple of my thoughts there on the e-page.
