Ponies vs. Daleks Season Two: Cutiemark Crusaders! by ~the-gneech on deviantART
It’s been a while, I know, but we’re back in business as the CMC try to get their timey-wimey cutiemarks! The dalek might actually stand a chance, this time…
…Nah.

The Opposite of Meh is SQUEE
Nov. 25th, 2013 08:37 amSo, it's the weirdest thing. Just last, what, Thursday? I was posting about how such much fandom stuff was failing to please, a situation that left me dispirited and downhearted.
What a difference a weekend makes!
This weekend was a pretty serious trifecta of fandom awesomeness. In chronological order, there was the MLP:FIM season four opener, Day of the Doctor (the 50th anniversary special), and the 25th anniversary of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Let's take each of these one by one, shall we? BE WARNED: Ahead be spoilers.
( Cut for spoilerificness. )
(Aaaand... that's it for the spoilers.)
The actual tic of the specific calendar day going by is not that significant, although it was nice seeing Joel et al. being congratulated and thanked all over Twitter last night. But what is significant is that 25 years on, this silly little show is still so important to so many people. Also significant is that on Thursday, even without a network to show it on, there will be the first Mystery Science Theater Turkey Day Marathon in (mumble) years, c/o mst3kturkeyday.com.
I had been planning to just pop in my MST3K DVDs all day and have our own little version here at The Hobbit Hole, but having Joel hosting one on the web? SO MUCH COOLER.
So here I am, just a few days after bemoaning the fact that stuff was failing to make me geek out, geeking out. And I couldn't be more pleased or grateful. I am now going to take all this burning geeky energy and pour it into my NaNoWriMo novel, which still needs 10,000 words before Saturday to be finished. I didn't write on it at all yesterday, but you know what? I seriously needed the recharge, and I got a great one.
Thanks, MLP. Thanks, Doctor! Thanks, MST. You rock. Awwwww, yeah!

A Hipster Before It Was Cool
Nov. 21st, 2013 09:42 amSo I signed on to LotRO for a bit this morning before settling down to work; new update, scrambled everything, all new skill system, etc. etc. And... meh.
But it's not LotRO, it's me.
I have, over the past I-don't-know-how-long, turned into a hipster, it seems. All these things I used to enjoy, from LotRO to Borderlands to MLP:FIM, they're too noisy now. There's too many people involved in them, too much STUFF going on around them. Somewhere along the line, the thing I was interested reached a critical mass where it turned sour, or became more work than fun, or where I just plain got all the fun I was going to get out of it. You ever go back and watch some show you loved as a little kid, but now that you're older, it just falls flat? Same kind of feeling.
I hit that point with Star Wars when the 3D-animated Clone Wars series came out. I hit that point with Star Trek somewhere around the time of Deep Space Nine or possibly the last few seasons of Next Generation when it was devolving into a soap opera in space. Usually this phenomenon is triggered by some change in the item in question, where the kernel of whatever I fell in love with gets obscured by things added on later.
Some of this is the larger cultural shift brought about by the internet, I suspect. When I was growing up, fandom stuff was obscure. Like, really obscure. As in, photocopied or hand-typed newsletters being sent around the country by snailmail obscure. When I was twelve, all the hardcore Doctor Who fans in Fairfax County could fit easily into a small meeting room at the public library (and did). Star Trek had three seasons plus an animated series, and none of us could believe that they'd actually made a movie about it.
Note that I'm not saying that was better, because it wasn't. What I'm saying is that it's what I am used to. Growing up in that environment set my comfort level.
The truth is, I'm not happy about how this has gone down. I like being a fun guy who likes things, not being a downer dude who is so over everything. But I'm not sure what to do about it. It's great to talk about "cultivating a child-like sense or wonder" or some such, but when that isn't there, faking it is not a feasible option. For now, I guess I'll just look for the next Cool Thing, while periodically going back to the core of those things that just don't do it for me any more, and see if I can find that kernel I fell in love with buried deep in all the junk that's been piled on top of it.

Doctor Canis (Commission)

Commission for Canis Rufus, of his winged red wolf as Tom Baker's Doctor.
In deference to all those fragile dalek fans, I didn't have him poke it in the eye and then knock it over with a stick.
...but it was tempting.
The Doctor Thinks I’m Rare and Elusive?

Ha, Ha, Silly Fanboy
Mar. 30th, 2012 11:33 amI just noticed a comment on one of my "Pony vs. Dalek" pics on DeviantArt "Does anyone else get the feeling this artist doesn't know much about daleks?"
*snicker*
Yeah, I totally don't know a thing at all about daleks. Like how very different the current uberdaleks are from the originals. Or how older episodes used to create armies of background daleks by printing up cardboard cutouts. Or how there was once a comic called "Abslom Daak, Dalek-Killer." Or, or, or...
Oh well, nerds gonna nerd.

Nerdsplaining and Pony Fatigue
Jan. 19th, 2012 11:17 amSo my pony fanart has generated me more views and comments on DeviantArt than the rest of my collection put together, and the Pony vs. Dalek series is no exception to this. No surprise, really... big properties have big fandoms, but whenever views and comments reach a certain tipping point, the silly stuff starts showing up.
Case in point: I'm starting to get comments about why the ponies couldn't possibly be beating the daleks, occasionally with the additional bonus of "If you'd seen [insert episode] you'd know that."
Tee hee!
Tell you what: when you can tell me (without looking it up) in which episode the Rutans actually make an appearance and why they're significant, then I might be interested in your Doctor Who geekery. ;) But even then, my reaction will be the same: "Dude. It's ponies. Your argument is invalid. Any argument is invalid." You might as well try to tell me that klingons could successfully conquer Bugs Bunny. (Or, for that matter, that the Hulk could totally beat up Superman.)
Anyway, as much as I'm enjoying all the attention from the pony art, I'm quickly starting to itch for something else to draw. I loves me some ponehs, but I have always been the type to crave variety. Artists (or fans for that matter) who glomp on to one topic and just do that over and over baffle me, no matter what buttons are being pushed. In the words of Auntie Mame, "Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving!"
So once I finish the initial Pony vs. Dalek series (Rarity is the last of the mane six, I'll probably finish her on Monday night) I'm going to make a point of doing something else for a little while. Not sure what yet, but I've still got the various suggestions from my call for topics a while back, and Arclight Adventures could always use more beefing up. I've also got some ideas percolating for a potential Suburban Jungle followup that I might start noodling around with. We'll see how all that goes.
In the meantime, I should really look at getting some stuff done today! So off I go. :) Catcha later!

Doctor Two? Patrick Matt Troughton Smith
Dec. 13th, 2011 06:31 amSo a few more "lost" Doctor Who segments have turned up, one from the first Doc, and one from the second. I haven't seen much of the second Doc, partially because so much of it has been lost, and partially because I just haven't hunted it down. I saw him in The Five Doctors, of course, and various random clips (and of course Patrick Troughton was a great one for appearing in oddball stuff like Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger), but my primary impression of the second Doc was always one of crankiness.
So I was intrigued by this "new" clip...
...and the whole time I watched it, I kept thinking of Doctor eleven, i.e, Matt Smith, the current incarnation. Bow tie, propensity towards hats ... all we need to do now is get Matt a clarinet and the Doc is practically reliving a previous incarnation! :)
It also occurs to me that kinda fits. The second Doc was forced to regenerate by the Time Lords, he didn't actually want to do it. So maybe he felt like he "wasn't done" with this version of himself and wanted to revisit it?

Your job is now your Time Lord name. The last digit of your phone number is the current regeneration you are in. The nearest clothing item to your right is now the most notable item in your current wardrobe. The last person you texted is your current companion. Your favorite word is now your catchphrase.

The TARDIS materializes with a pained wheeze and an ethereal echo. The door pops open and out steps the fifth Application Developer, resplendent in olive socks. He turns to his companionlythandra and says, "Etcetera!"
