Muscid Draconis by Amy Pronovost
Mouse dragons! How can you not love 'em? Very nice color work, too. The "beads" border must have been a lot of work!

C Eagle by Cara Mitten
Nifty avian 'furry' design, that gets bonus points for being a pic of somebody I know. :) Lots of detail.

I've been busy, but Yerf has not particularly, so there are only a few "catch-up" pieces.

All I can say is "Awwwww!"

A Lion for Tursi by Brenda DiAntonis
D'Aww, he's cute. :) I'm always impressed when somebody gets the eyepatches ... as you may have noticed, I rarely do them myself. I know they're there -- it's just a pain to draw 'em in a 3" x 4" square.

A very appealing style, and nice use of perspective. Nice work all around.

Trickster by Stina Lovkvist
Autumn leaves, a deep forest, a fox with a roguish look ... what's not to love? My only gripe is that I can't decisively tell the gender.

With You by Tamara Gale
Beautiful background, nice detail on the costumes ... plus I'm just a sucker for Revolutionary era garb. A very good piece!

Dancin' by Meaghan Arbital
Not actually posted today, but who cares? ;) She says it's supposed to be a tanuki, but it looks like a raccoon to me! Given the R-rated anatomy peculiar to tanuki, I'm not sure you could post a tanuki pic on Yerf without strategic placement of furniture or something.

Anyway, I love the pose and attitude. Very fun pic!

EDIT: Oh! Also! A nice quote via [livejournal.com profile] chef_troy:

Wild Cherry by Darby Burke
Yay, cheesecake! I need to improve my own skills in this department. Nice energy, very good anatomy work, fun sense of character.

Dancing Elephants by Meaghan Arbital
Lots of energy and character! So much of the stuff on Yerf is angsty squiggles or snarly demon gargoyles with sharp corners, that whenever I see happy, 'toony stuff, I instinctively cheer!

For a while, I was seeing various folks on my friends list post "VCL Pick of the Day" links; I can't look at VCL while I'm at work, however, but thankfully Yerf lives again. :) And as I want to get back into sprucing up my art a bit (it's been kinda sub-par lately) I am attempting to get back into studying other people's work for both techniques and inspiration. So I'm going to try to post a Yerf Pick of the Day on a semi-regular basis.

Because I haven't been actually looking at Yerf for the past month and had a lot to catch up on (Hey, I been busy!), today I'm actually going to do a two-fer.

Happy Owl by Lyosha
Squeeably cute, and mighty nice marker work. Those eyes rock.

Lemurs by Nevar
Holy CRAP is that nice color work! I completely missed this one at the artshow. It looks like color pencil, with possibly some pastels mixed in? I could get lost in that fur!

More thoughts on Yerf's absence, and on art communities in general. One of my all-time favorite things about Yerf was that there was always something new to be found, by simply clicking on the "Recent Uploads" page. Given Yerf's fairly stringent (if sometimes unevenly-distributed) requirements, you could generally be confident that the stuff that appeared there would be pretty good, and due to Yerf's liveliness (for lack of a better term), you could be pretty sure that a daily check would net you something worth looking at.

This is one of the things I miss the most, actually, is the daily shot-in-the-arm of inspiration. My artistic ability thrives when surrounded by creative input, and tends to flounder when left in isolation -- which is a major reason I'm such a con-hound. So I've been looking for an alternate place to find that fix.

Artvark, alas, is officially "retiring," so that is kind of a wash. YNA seems to be picking up a bit, so I'll be checking that regularly now. I try to check out DeviantArt periodically, but the navigation there ranges from "incredibly confusing" to "completely incomprehensible," with occasional stops at "INTENSELY FRUSTRATING!!!" ... so I tend to avoid it. (Wow, I miss the simplicity of Yerf!) Too bad, too, 'cause there's some nice stuff there. VCL, of course, is not browsable at work -- and only barely browseable at home without my eyes melting. (Thus, I'm grateful to people like [livejournal.com profile] doodlesthegreat who post "VCL Picks of the Day." Speaking of which, happy birthday, Doodles!)

There is also [livejournal.com profile] furryartists, but that tends to be more "I have an auction up!" announcements than actual art posts -- and even those are only two or three a month.

I know there's still art out there being made, and good stuff, too! It's just a matter of finding it.
