For all the horror stories, the root canal was actually fine. The worst part was actually the fact that there was a TV playing "People's Court" in the dentistry room. This was the first part, the actual drilling; there are two follow-up bits, which are the permanent filling and the crown, respectively. I also have another tooth due to go through all of the above shortly thereafter.

Let this be a lesson to you, kiddies — don't wait 8 years between dentist visits. :P Only diligence at brushing and flossing has enabled me to still have teeth at all. :P

Unfortunately, I'm back on antibiotics again because the one tooth was so far gone that part of the nerve had actually died. Since the whole process of a root canal is designed to go in and remove the nerve, that wasn't inherently a problem, but it does mean I have to be super-careful to make sure it doesn't get infected between now and then.

I'm sure you're all just pleased as punch to read about it, too. ;) At least it's my mouth we're talking about here!

Well, I for one am glad things went well. I'm sorry you have further issues to be dealt with, though.

My advice, go for the gold crown. Add some bling to it. Otherwise, they are pretty much no-see, and not worth it.

Might I suggest a listen to Weird Al's "Drill Me" song, a parody of U2's Batman "Thrill Me"

Be glad it didn't have to be pulled. I let one cavity get so bad I couldn't chew on that side of my mouth for some time. I thought the thing I was feeling was some sort of chunk of food stuck between my teeth I just couldn't get out, but it was a bump from my rearmost molar. Poor thing had to come out because it was too late for a root canal, and so did its upstairs brother. TT^TT

Okay, you've convinced me. Ed's getting his dentist visit as soon as I can schedule it. (I've been putting off the scheduling part, because he'll need a Saturday visit, and I do stuff on Saturday.)

Root Canals - Been there Gneech

Due to plaque I have to visit my dentist twice a year. About 5 years back I cracked a molar. I have, what my dentist refers to as brittle teeth (well, grinding my teeth hasn't helped).

Anyway this molar had four roots (not the average 3) and I sat in a chair for 90 minutes. I must admit my tooth (now dead because the root canal) felt much better. Then came the gold crown. $2100 BUCKS! It was only good for about two years, then I had to have the tooth extracted.

My dentist said it was rare for the tooth to continue cracking after a root canal, but that's what happened to mine, which resulted eventually in the same problem you've got.

Now I another molar's cracked, but it's not bad enough to have a root canal.. Yet.

Hope you feel better soon Gneech - I do understand the discomfort.
