The figures are done! After a few sessions of the Savage World of Ghostbusters using the closest minis I had on hand, I decided I had to have proper GB minis. I took a long look at Carmen’s Fun Painty Time set of Ghostbusters minis, and while I don’t have Carmen’s sculpting chops, I am pretty pleased with the final result. For those interested in the process, I figured I’d write up some details here. You can click through any of the pics to see larger versions.

"Good job, Multi-Man!"

I'm not sure where last week went, I seem to have been in some sort of fugue state during the whole thing. Or possibly just half-asleep. Either way, it went like "Whoosh!" and the only way I know it happened at all is by the paper trail and the vapor trail.

The weekend was spent mostly with the in-laws, where we successfully avoided talking about politics despite the best efforts of certain corners. They were quite generous with birthday gifts however, for which I'm grateful. :) We also ate a lot of shrimp. ;)

The most interesting bits of the past week and weekend for me have mostly been involved with gaming stuff-- specifically, I now have 3/5 Ghostbusters minis finished and expect to finish the rest between now and Wednesday, at which point I intend to take a bunch of photos and post a "how I did it" story about them. I think they're pretty snazzy, considering my "perennial newbie" status in regard to mini-craft. They're not showpieces, but for tabletop play they're quite nice.

I also made some progress on the next Fortress of Tears scenario as well as painting [livejournal.com profile] sirfox's mini for same, and continued plugging away on my new idea for Savage Worlds, which I'm quite excited about. I think this has the potential to be written up and published as a proper Plot Point Campaign, and I've started allocating mental resources and long-term ideas accordingly. I'd have to connect with Pinnacle and find out the appropriate licensing info, etc., but it might be a good project for Kickstarter.

Anyway! That was the week that was. There were also some highly-traumatic medical/health things that I don't want to relive (but is resolved now thankfully) and a lot of "stuff that adults have to think about" that I'm also just as happy to be done with. Suffice to say that our house/financial stuff is carrying on satisfactorily and things are generally okay with us.

And now, back to the bit factory. Catcha later, everyone!

A successive progression of strange dreams this morning, mostly around the theme of old movies and TV shows, specifically The Green Berets, Rat Patrol, Best of the West, and finally Tim Burton's Batman. Mixed into this mess was the usual "dream I've already gotten out of bed" trick my brain does to avoid actually getting out of bed, and a random vignette that featured Drezzer Wolf attempting to sketch a picture of Conrad. Hey there, fellas, what brings you around?

Anyway! Many thanks all around for the birthday wishes this past weekend... alas, I can no longer make "ultimate question" jokes about my age. From here my age doesn't become interesting again until 69, which fortunately is a ways off. :P I spent the weekend mostly painting miniatures: one of the Ghostbusters is finished, two more are close, and the other two are somewhere in the first pass still. In this batch of minis I've also been doing a lot of my old Doctor Who minis that have been sitting in a drawer needing to be painted, some assorted random monsters, and minis for the Fortress of Tears campaign. It's so rare that I have both the time and the drive to paint miniatures, that I tend to do a dozen at once, but that actually works out well because I can rotate through them as I go, working on minis B and C while the paint on mini A is drying.

The weekend spent aggressively doing nothing was deliberate: this coming week will be a big one-- not as stressfully "Everything is happening!" as last week, hopefully, but still big. While work decided to explode and go nuts on us, we have been in the midst of what will hopefully be a very advantageous home refi, which has been both hairy and scary; we are also getting new insulation, new gutters, and getting the back door re-hung. We got an estimate on having the house painted, but have decided to punt on that. Oh, and I'm getting yet another crown, which will hopefully be the last of my major dental work for a while. [livejournal.com profile] lythandra's been dealing with her own health issues, which are not as cut-and-dried as a crown on her tooth, nor immediately serious, but still annoying and stress-inducing.

On top of all that, [livejournal.com profile] mammallamadevil has been going through crises of her own, and I feel bad that we haven't been able to be more helpful with that while we were scrambling to deal with everything life was throwing at us. I intend to fix that this week. Kerry has come through for us plenty in the past and it's time for us to return the favor!

So... that's why it's been pretty quiet here. My sporadic posts about gaming have largely been me bleeding off steam by taking breaks to think about stuff that wasn't work-home-health. Once we get through this week, assuming no more 16-ton weights are thrown at us, we should be back on our much more regular even keel.

So let's go! *goes*

One wrinkle about switching to Savage Worlds for my Ghostbusters campaign is that SW assumes the presence of miniatures, whereas the old UHM system wouldn’t know what to do with ‘em if you had ‘em.

Of course, there aren’t any readily-available Ghostbusters miniatures; the closest thing would be print-your-own “cardboard heroes” types found on the web. But not about let something like that stop me, I pulled out some of my various oddball moderns from the “Wall o’ Minis” that approximated the group “in their civvies,” as it were. On top of that, I went online and found a 2010 Hot Wheels “ECTO-1,” so here’s the team as it stands (click-through for larger photo):

GB_civvies_web

Thing is, Obsessive Gamer that I am, I know I can do better than this. To that end, I’ve taken a leaf from Carmen’s Fun Painty Time and am hacking together my own proper GB figs. (If you’re interested in GB or minis, I highly recommend you follow the link and check out the related posts– the author goes into a pretty detailed step-by-step on the process they followed.)

So today I ordered the Heresy “Inspectors” as well as some gun bits and “Communication Packs” from Secret Weapon; these will eventually become proper “in uniform” Ghostbuster miniatures for the game.

In order to make the figs a little more readily identifiable at the table, I’ll probably take a cue from The Real Ghostbusters and put the different characters into different uniforms. Goth boss Lola has already been established in the game to be wearing a black jumpsuit (“only until I can find something darker”), with ironic bright pink trim and Hello Kitty motifs. I was figuring that Bruno could have an aggressive (or possibly inmate-ish) orange, Charley could have a classic Ghostbuster gray, and Ivan might go for scientific white, hazmat yellow, or possibly “Dr. Clayton Forrester” green.

Unfortunately, the Heresy stuff is coming from the UK and may take some time to get here! On the other hand, the way life seems to conspire to keep us from playing, we might still only have a session or two before the figs are ready. XD

Expect progress pics as progress is made!

PS: Yes, that is a miniature of Velma. And yes, I do have the rest of the Scooby Gang. And the van.

We'll see how long it lasts, but for the moment at least I feel much better. First off, we left work a little early on Friday, which always helps. I spent the evening painting miniatures and watching The Fantastic Mr. Fox, which had actually been given to me for my birthday and sat on the shelf for three months because I never watch TV any more.

Let's start with the minis, shall we?

The Rest of the Weekend

Fantastic Mr. Fox was a fun little quirk of a movie. I particularly liked the use of "cuss."

Saturday was spent putting up the Christmas tree and doing a little cleanup around the house, followed by Pathfinder in the evening. The group attempted to get into a wizard's tower by luring away the giants guarding it, and were very close to pulling off their gambit until the dice gods frowned upon a concentration check, causing [livejournal.com profile] lythandra's dimension door to fizzle. That left the characters at ground zero for the giants' charge, so they ended up just killing the giants instead. But I gotta give 'em credit, it was a good try. Enlisting the help of the local guardsmen (of whom [livejournal.com profile] hantamouse's character is an officer, after all) was something I honestly hadn't thought of, but it made perfect sense so I let 'em run with it. (In retrospect, I believe the Lions of Brindol are supposed to be 5th level, not 3rd level, which would have helped a bit, but not that much. I'll have to go back to Red Hand of Doom and convert a statblock in case it comes up again.)

Once inside the tower, they took out one of the six hags leading the invasion of Brindol in a fight which had them worried but actually wasn't that difficult; they also discovered there is another interested party known only as "A" who seems to think of the giants merely as pawns in his or her own schemes. At the end of the session, the heroes had passed through a magic mirror into "the shadow realm" where the wizard they came to rescue is imprisoned, and we ended the session there.

Today

Today will be spent finishing off Christmas shopping and card-getting, getting the stupid heater in the car FIXED or else, and just generally dealing with all the piddly stuff that's been stacking up over the past several weeks. Hopefully we can start the week with a clean (or mostly-clean) slate, enabling us to start making forward progress again!

The big finale of the "Drow vs. Dwarves" thread of my Pathfinder game came last night. The heroes, still searching for the Hammer of Urthat-Ghan, headed to the Iron Garrison [1], where a vision had revealed the hammer to be. The vision also revealed that there were drow, trolls, and other monsters a-plenty guarding it, and it wasn't wrong. When the heroes got there, it looked something like this...

Iron Garrison: Before

The roper visible in the upper-right corner is a stand-in for the yochlol they fought once before; the structure in the back is the actual Iron Garrison building itself, long standing in ruin. The players went in knowing this would be a tough fight — but as it turned out, they had little trouble with the baddies visible here. The troll and cyclopses on the far bridge had orders to stay at their posts until the heroes got close or attacked, but even if they'd waded in, the heroes are tough enough that even these big bruisers are mostly cannon-fodder for them. The yochlol fled before they could engage it, taking the leader of the drow with it, abandoning all the drow warriors to be slaughtered as part of machinations of drow politics.

There were some interesting tactical bits that caught my attention. The drow on the rope-bridge had plans to cut it down, dumping any heroes who might try to cross it into the river and herding the rest towards the stone bridge at the back — except that the heroes made a point of blowing the whole thing up with a fireball on the first round, leaving the drow a bit confused as to what to do next (especially when a well-placed wind wall prevented them from firing their crossbows at [livejournal.com profile] lythandra's sorcerer, which was their back-up plan). Also, the troll and cyclopses on the stone bridge in the rear were intended to act as muscle for the big baddies lurking in the Iron Garrison itself, but [livejournal.com profile] hantamouse's ranger very deliberately pulled them back to the covered area near the heroes' entry point — which was probably a critically-important move.

For the real threat was the half-dragon fire giant and his giant cleric backup lurking within the Iron Garrison itself, who had been waiting the whole time for all of the rest of the foes to soften up the heroes (and for the heroes' buffs to expire or otherwise get used up) before engaging them. His plan was not to come out until the heroes reached the stone bridge, but thanks to the ranger, once the heroes got to the stone bridge, they were "just" facing the two fire giants, instead of the two fire giants, a bladerager troll, and two cyclopses!

The fire giants were plenty, of course. The half-dragon fire giant started the battle facing [livejournal.com profile] jamesbarrett's weapon master alone on the bridge, and unloaded a 15d6 breath weapon on him, and then started carving him up with a 3d6+18 flaming greatsword. (Luckily, the weapon master was wearing a ring of fire resistance, which saved his bacon two or three times during the fight.) The fire giant also managed to get in a (brief) monologue, in which he announced that he was claiming revenge for the death of his half-brother Azarr Kul, the big baddie from Red Hand of Doom — yes, they've now killed another of Tiamat's children — and proclaiming with a certain amount of outrage, "This is OUR world! NOT YOURS!"

His breath weapon very nearly brought down both the weapon master and Braegli, the dwarf cleric whom they've been helping out the whole time and who insisted on coming along for the final battle; the fire giant cleric did his best to assist by using a custom ability that did fire damage in a 30' radius while healing any creature with a [fire] descriptor for the same amount, but he kept rolling so badly that the damage bounced off the players' various magical fire resistances, and the healing to the boss was negligible. In the last round of the fight, it was very much a matter of the fire giant or the weapon master — both had single-digit hit points, and the fire giant's breath weapon had recharged for another 15d6 blast, but the weapon master's turn came up first, and the fire giant went down! The cleric, while still relatively tough, went down fast once he was alone against the might of the entire party. And so it was that the Hammer of Urthat-Ghan was recovered!

Iron Garrison: After

They took the Hammer of Urthat-Ghan back to the Temple of Moradin and reconsecrated it, at which point Braegli's spells immediately flooded back to him and he dinged a level on the spot. The heroes were then led back to the Hammerfist Holds, where they were hailed as mighty heroes of which the bards would sing, and there was a magnificent dwarf-style party.

From here, they have to decide what to do next ... it's clear that the fire giants are seeking the prison of the Fire Titan, somewhere under the lost dwarven city of Urthat-Ghan, and have been operating under the assumption that the dwarves know where it is. The dwarves, on the other hand, have been searching for Urthat-Ghan themselves without luck, as their mission from the gods is to keep the Fire Titan imprisoned, which they can't really do until they find him. On the other hand, they've been away from Brindol for several days now, and have no idea what may be developing on the surface. They have a stone of recall that will allow them to teleport back and forth by burning a 3rd level arcane spell slot, but before they leave the Hammerfist Holds, [livejournal.com profile] sirfox's cleric wants to try some attempts at divination with Lathander to find out what he can about Urthat-Ghan, since Moradin seems so strangely quiet on the subject.

Alas! The cheapie psuedohistorical toys I found will not suffice for giants. They had some Powhatan Indians (now that's specific!) that might have worked for hill giants, except they weren't large enough, being barely 1.25" tall themselves; they also had knights and pirates ... but no vikings. How can you have cheapie pseudohistorical toys without having vikings? Scandalous.

So I bought a boatload of prepainted plastics from WotC in the after-market. I managed to get a couple of good deals via Troll and Toad and eBay. And I'm going to keep looking for those vikings ... they've gotta be out there somewhere!

-The Gneech
the_gneech: (Conan Civilization Sucks)
Great googily-moogily, but giants minis are expensive! Unpainted, unassembled Reaper giants seem to average around $28 a head ... aftermarket pre-painted WotC plastics around $18 a head for the most common ones, if you can find them in stock, and the better ones skyrocket up in price from there.

Must weigh budget considerations!

...when I'm not busy shoveling snow, of course.

At ~$10 a set, Dungeon Tiles are some of the best value for money in the gaming hobby. I've dipped my toe into the world of tiles before, most recently with the Star Wars equivalent set, "Galaxy Tiles," and various maps from the miniatures. But recently I went on a tile-acquiring binge, and the main bulk (a from Paizo) arrived today. So now I have:

  • Galaxy Tiles (x2)

  • Arcane Towers

  • Fane of the Forgotten Gods

  • Caves of Carnage

  • Dire Tombs (x2)

Of the D&D sets, "Dire Tombs" is by far the best, but it's also one of the older sets and so harder to find. Unfortunately, they only released the one set of "Galaxy Tiles" and show no signs of releasing more any time soon, but I have enough maps from the miniatures game and the old West End game (not to mention scenery bits from the old Micro Collection and other sources) that I can probably make do for most purposes. Besides, being space opera, Star Wars is just as likely to use fantasy tiles as it is deckplates.

I figure this splurge will give me a nice core to work from. I'll probably pick up new sets one at a time as they come out in the future (like I say, value for money). The next challenge is going to be storing them...

Hmm...

...want to paint miniatures! Three specific ones, in fact.

Actually, one of them I'm not sure I have on hand. So I want to go to Game Parlor, then paint miniatures! Or go home and check, probably then go to Game Parlor, then paint miniatures.

Then I want to game; as a player I mean, not the GM. Some fantasy, and some pulp adventure/CoC-style. I could happily play Star Wars, too, tho it's not what I'm really jonesin' for.

Well, the Magnificent Egos drama has come to a strange resolution, but I'll take it.

Last Thursday night, borrowing some of [livejournal.com profile] mammallamadevil's net-fu, I got a variety of e-mail addresses associated with the Magnificent Egos website and copied them all onto an e-mail in which I detailed what had been going on and threatened to sick Paypal's "Dispute Resolution" department on them if I didn't get an answer and a phone number for a real person by Monday morning. I also copied the Paizo customer service people on the message, mentioning that they had been trying without success to resolve this problem as well, mostly to keep Paizo in the loop.

As expected, throwing the weight of a financial institution (even if it's just Paypal) at them got their attention. Friday morning I got an e-mail from somebody called "The Pirate King", who seems to be the muckety-muck of Magnificent Egos, saying that my order shipped out ages ago but that they'd send me another one, all I had to do was call "Anne" at a given phone number.

So, Friday afternoon, I called Anne and got a voicemail box. I left a voicemail explaining my situation, leaving my number, and asking her to call me back. She didn't, of course.

Friday night, I got an e-mail from Jeff Alvarez at Paizo, telling me that he had been completely unable to get a response out of anyone at Magnificent Egos, so they had sent out a replacement shipment of the missing figures from Paizo's own stock, except for one figure they didn't carry, for which he gave me Paizo store credit.

That, I must admit, really impressed me. All I was hoping for from Paizo was contact info (as Magnificent Egos refers to themselves as being "partnered" with Paizo) -- I certainly wasn't expecting them to shell over a $45 order of miniatures that they didn't get paid for. I thanked him profusely, and naturally have gone to the Paizo site to spend the store credit and then some to try to make sure they get at least something out of the deal. (Of course, I'm already paying them for annual subscriptions of Dungeon and Dragon and PDF downloads of OOP D&D stuff ... but I figure they still deserve something!) As you can probably guess, I didn't buy any more Magnificent Egos stuff.

By the way ... Tuesday morning, and no call from Anne at Magnificent Egos, nor followup from The Pirate King. Nor do I expect any. Like, ever.

So yeah. Magnificent Egos can bite me. But Paizo rules!

-The Gneech
the_gneech: (Conan Civilization Sucks)
Back in November I ordered some miniatures from Magnificent Egos, a trendy semi-new minis company, paying via Paypal. Weeks passed, and the miniatures didn't come. It got to be a month, the miniatures still didn't come.

Their website (at the time) had a feedback form. I filled out the feedback form asking for a status report on my order.

Nothing.

More nothing.

Still more nothing.

I e-mailed the contact listed on my Paypal receipt.

Nothing.

More nothing.

Still more nothing.

Well, now I'm moving and my old address is not going to be valid for much longer. So I investigated a bit today and found that (a) they have pulled down their online catalog, replacing it with links to Paizo publishing, and (b) their "company blog" (which hasn't been updated since early Feb) lists the e-mail of a new company president. So I re-sent my "Hey, send me my minis or my money back please!" e-mail, copying new president on it, mentioning that I have a new address, as well as posting to the Paizo customer service message boards asking for their help in the matter.

If I don't hear back by Wednesday, I'll look into what kind of pressure I can get Paypal to bear on them. At this stage, I'd be just as happy to have my $46 back and be done with it.

Guy at the Hobby Shop: "Yeah, actually, we're going to be putting our Lord of the Rings miniatures line on clearance in the next week or so."

Me: "Well, well, well!"

No, I absolutely don't need more miniatures. But I don't think that's liable to stop me. I can think of at least two items from the LotR line that I decided I would only get if I could find them at a discount price. And I bet I can find more that I would be willing to buy at a discount price.

I just gotta make sure I get [livejournal.com profile] lythandra's berfday prezzie first. ;)

Well, for all the griping I do about Games Workshop's prices, I can't fault their customer service.

When I bought the new fig for Baylor, I also picked up for myself the blister pack set of Elrond's sons, Elladan and Elrohir. Unfortunately, one of Elrohir's swords had been weakened by rattling around in the package, which I couldn't tell from looking at it ... so almost immediately after I assembled and basecoated the fig, *snap!*

Grumble, grumble. -.-

So I called them today to ask about maybe sending him in for a replacement, expecting to be either told "no" (since the figure was assembled and primed already) or to have to fill out a form, send it in and wait for them to get back to me.

Neither of which was the case. The customer service rep on the phone cheerfully took my name and address and said they'd mail the figure right out to me. Just like that! :)

So ... yeah. They're pricey. But they've got good customer service! Well done, GW. :)

And the only cure is to run around, shootin' stuff!

Which is simply my very oblique way of saying we played more of [livejournal.com profile] jamesbarrett's D&D game last night, and Celedras was firing off that bow like there was no tomorrow. Good thing, too, 'cause every monster in the place seemed to be under the impression that I was the meatshield! Laurie's barbarian hasn't taken a hit yet, but poor Celedras has been chewed up and spit out by wights, mohrgs, and the occasional trap. At the risk of engaging in schadenfreude, when the blackguard showed up and started wailing on [livejournal.com profile] camstone's paladin, I wanted to cheer. "Yay! Somebody finally took more damage than me!"

Baylor gave back to the blackguard as good as he got, tho, so it's all good. Let those melee types wail on each other! I'll keep standing back here and plinking away with my bow.

Last night was also the premiere of the new Baylor fig, including the infamous flaming bastard sword! I'll just hide the photos behind a cut, here... )

While I'm at it, I'm going to show off a few other miniatures I've painted lately! Barbarians and zombies and gladiators, oh my! )

Fun, fun, fun. :)

I was so jazzed at finding the pin vise, I forget to pick up more Milliput. :P

Oh well, I won't need it for a while anyway.

I did pick up some Citadel spraycoat, we'll see if that gets rid of the frosting problem. It wasn't anywhere near as expensive as I would have guessed, given that it's a Games Workshop product. ;)

*spritz, spritz*

-The Gneech
the_gneech: (Legolas silhouette)
This new prescription seems to mess with Laurie's equilibrium; she had another dizzy spell this morning, so she had to go lay down for a bit and we got in late for work again. So we'll work through lunch or something to make up the time. Meanwhile, she's gonna call her doctor and find out what's the deal prescribing something that makes her inner ear go nuts.

On the other hand, this had the side-effect of giving me the time I needed to finish the Baylor figs, flaming swords and all. All they need now is the protective coat, but I'm not going to do that with the Armory crud; I'm going to hit a model shop on the way home and pick up something that doesn't suck for the purpose.

That does lead me to wonder -- are flames glossy, or matte? Hmm.

Once that's done, I suspect I'll have had my fill of the current "Paint Miniatures!" fit for a little while. It's been cool and fun, but there are other things that require my attention, and other enthusiasms to be indulged in. Probably this weekend I'll post some photos of the Baylor fig and one or two others I've been doing in this batch.

I've got other figs I'd like to paint, but none of them are urgent for actual in-game use any time soon. As the time gets closer to actually use them, I imagine I'll pull 'em out and finish 'em up.

-The Gneech
the_gneech: (Boromir battle)
Going in late this morning enabled me to get the day's drawing done before work, which is always nice; that in turn freed up my evening enough to almost finish painting the "upgrade" fig for [livejournal.com profile] camstone's paladin in [livejournal.com profile] jamesbarrett's game.

The fig is actually Isildur from the Lord of the Rings line, but he makes a pretty good paladin. We'll just assume that the flanges on his helmet are emblems of Pelor rather than the White Tree emblems on the crown of Gondor, right? ;)

Camstone described Baylor as having more or less permanent five-o'clock-shadow, which I tried to get across on the fig but it's pretty hard to do, especially when there's already a beard sculpted onto the face. The net result looks a little bit like Ringo Starr, but actually I kinda like that.

In fact, I'm pretty happy with how the figure(s) came out overall, with one minor thing -- I realized as I was half-way through painting it that I had meant to sculpt some flames onto the sword with Milliput, as Baylor has a magical flaming sword, but had forgotten to before I started painting. Unfortunately, I can't really go back and work with putty after the painting is started without ruining the paint job -- residue and stray bits from the putty get all over the place.

This leaves me with the choice of finishing the fig as is with no flaming sword, or adding the flames tomorrow night and then touching up the paint job after the putty dries. Honestly, I'm not really happy with either option. I painted the sword a shining white-silver with gold trim to suggest a particularly fancy weapon ... I also thought of painting the blade yellow-orange, but I figured that would just make it look like a toy.

And of course, it's a matched set, so what I do to the one, I'll want to do to the other.

Pfui. I guess I'll just have to see how I feel about it tomorrow. [livejournal.com profile] camstone, if you have an opinion on the matter, let me know!

Meanwhile, it's bedtime.

-The Gneech

EDIT: Hold the phone! I just thought of an alternative technique that might do the job just as well as Milliput, without getting schmutz all over the figure! I've started an experiment creating a "flaming" toothpick, which I'm going to let dry overnight. If it looks okay in the morning, I'll use the same technique on the Baylor fig. SET CHEER = WOOHOO!
